We awoke early even though we had gone to bed pretty late. My feet were itching to get out on the streets so I walked to get some breakfast, on a mission to find the biggest blueberry muffin for Dylan and croissants for my Nina.
I walked through Times Square while I waited for
places to open, past the store owners watering the side walk and the other
tourists whose body clocks had not adjusted yet.
Not long after we were out of the room and on our way, thankfully
we didn’t encounter any cockroaches on our way to the A train down to 14th street
followed by a short walk to little island.
We
explored little island then sat in the shade in the amphitheater watching the
sparrows put on a show as my son narrated. It’s a nice little oasis and this
early in the morning was not busy at all.
Afterwards
we walked over to the entrance to the high line and enjoyed a leisurely stroll
along stopping to lay on the beds and sit on the benches. It’s such a pleasure
in the summer and a stark contrast from when I last walked along it during the
January bitter cold.
Eventually we came to Hudson yards, took a few pictures of the vessel, then onto the shops. Inside we had a look in PIQ and bought far too much from Dylan’s candy bar and then had lunch at shake shack.
Lunch was a shroom
burger for Nina, shack burger for me and chicken bites for Dylan along with fries all round. I had the 50/50 drink (ice tea and lemonade and
found it refreshing but far too sweet) we each tried a bit of the chocolate
bars we had purchased from Dylan’s previously for dessert.
While
we were finishing up we bought tickets to the edge observation deck and were
100 stories high a few minutes later.
Observation
decks are expensive but for really getting an appreciation for how vast and
built up manhattan is there is nothing like them to give you that wow factor so
I would encourage 1st timers to do one on your visit. I’ve done all the
observation decks apart from the summit so far and I think the order for me
based on view would be
1.
top of the rock
2.
Edge
3.
OWO
4. Empire State
So our quick nap turned into a couple of hours asleep so the lego store had to wait as it would be closed in a few minutes.
Instead we went on a world tour of targets to see if we could find the wrestling figures Dylan had on his list unfortunately they all seemed to have disappointing stock so he ended up with 2 figures from his backup list.
Our tour did take us down to Herald Square which had some live music but Dylan refused a dance with Nina.
We had a flying visit through Macy’s for those of you travelling with kids after October there will be a small toys r us on the 7th floor kids section, there is also a McDonald’s on that floor which might be useful for some. On the subject of McDonald’s, how expensive is McDonald’s in New York!?
We walked back through Times Square which was sooooooo busy! My last couple of trips were in the dead of winter so I kind of forgot what it was like.
Still quite full from lunch we just picked up some dollar pizza on the way back to the hotel, even bad pizza is good pizza in New York
We
picked up some supplies from a Duane Reade of water and goldfish crackers.
Back
in the hotel, Dylan had a quick wrestling show with his figures before
bed.
Update
on Dylan's thoughts about New York…. “It’s good but it really smells!”
